Big Issues and Big Words. Europe and Europeanness in the Romanian Presidential Discourse on EU-Membership 1993-2017 is a new book by Ramona Chiriac, Romanian consul general in Bavaria, Germany. The book offers an academic insight into the making and unmaking of the big narratives of Europe, the East and Romania as they have been constructed by the Romanian presidents after 1989.
161 presidential disourses uttered by the Romanian presidents have been analysed from a critical discourse analysis perspective. The main premise is that discourse is a tool of power and control and thus, an instrument for the social construction of reality. Presidents, as elected representatives of the nation, are afforded a unique rhetorical platform and stand as the main producers of meaning, especially in paternalistic societies.
