Communitalks 1: Communication trends in 2021 and beyond

The IPRA Philippines Chapter is pleased to invite colleagues to the first in a series of webinars entitled Communitalks. This first webinar will be held on Thursday 28 January at 16:00 – 18:00 Philippine time (GMT+8). The webinar will reveal insights into the growing influence of public relations in government and in business, as well as the academic world and civil society.

This webinar features five distinguished PR professionals who will share their experiences in the past year which have equipped them to face 2021 with optimism and confidence. The speakers are IPRA President Philippe Borremans, the director of the Science and Technology Information Institute Richard Burgos, consultant and coach Ritzi Villarico-Ronquillo, CEO of Buensalido PR Joy Buensalido, and assistant vice president advocacy and marketing at utilities company Maynilad Abigail Ho-Torres.

Background to the IPRA Philippines Chapter

The IPRA Philippines Chapter was established in the early 1990s by leading Filipino PR practitioners Max Edralin, Rene Nieva, Romy Virtusio and Frankie Roman. Since then, the membership has grown to include close to twenty personalities in the industry all of whom practice at a world-class level abiding by the tenets of IPRA. Over the years, the Chapter has implemented notable projects including the book How to Make It in PR published in 2007. Chapter members contribute to an ongoing weekly column PR Matters, which appears in the country’s leading business paper, the Business Mirror. The current president is Jingjing Romero.

CRISIS2021

An invitation also to the first in a series of IPRA endorsed online events called CRISIS2021. This live event, entitled Covid-19: Learning and consequences for international crisis communication research and practice, takes place on Friday 5 February 2021 from 16.00 – 18.00 CET. The event is organised by the crisis communication section of ECREA (European Communication Research and Education Association). A keynote will be made by IPRA President, Philippe Borremans.

The coronavirus pandemic has been a disruptive and tragic experience for societies around the world. For the crisis communication community, the pandemic is an issue of importance, calling for academic and professional exchanges that reach beyond national borders. Your specific expertise is welcome in order to discuss the following questions:

  • During the pandemic, what have we learned about crisis communication by governments, organizations, health experts, and the media?
  • What are the consequences crisis researchers and practitioners need to draw from this pandemic? And what should be on the research agenda for the next few years?

These questions will be introduced in four keynotes:

  • Philippe Borremans, president IPRA, speaking on Crisis and emergency risk communication – the need for an integrated approach.
  • Professor Yan Jin, University of Georgia, USA, speaking on Gaining insights from a multi-methodological approach to crisis learning and pandemic communication management.
  • Professor Matthew Seeger, dean of the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts, Wayne State University, USA, who will address Communicating death and dying during crises – uncertainty, equivocality and strategic ambiguity.
  • Andreas Schwarz, chair of the Department of Public Relations and Communication of Technology, llmenau University of Technology, Germany, speaking on Internal risk and crisis communication on the covid-19 pandemic – global experiences of higher education institutions.
