Summer school in Paris

The University of Maryland School of Public Policy will offer a for-credit international graduate course on understanding and synthesizing evidence-based research in Summer 2018. Classes will be held in Paris, France, from June 4 to 15, with some assignments being due before and after the two weeks in Paris.
With the assistance of the Economics Department at Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), this study abroad course is designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate students studying public policy, public administration, and related subjects such as education, governance, international development, political science, public health, social welfare, sociology, and urban planning. BledCom launches EUPRERA Presidents' panel

BledCom is a partner conference of EUPRERA and this year, on the occasion of its 25 jubilee edition, BledCom launches the new EUPRERA Presidents’ panel: a session during which our past presidents will offer their views and stimulate debate.
They will be asked to consider how changing social systems might have made crisis communication more of a challenge because of the erosion of trust, the diminution of collective action and the trend towards putting oneself first. Stay tuned for more updates! Go to BledCom website

Top 11 Public Relations Research Insights of 2017

For the fourth annual edition of the Top 10 Research Insights of 2017, the Institute for PR did something different and added an 11th study: “we believe every single one of these research studies have some great learnings for the profession”.
This report is based on the studies’ rigor of methodology, findings, relevance to practice and accessibility. And this year we are happy to see the European Communication Monitor, conducted by EUPRERA and EACD and lead by Ansgar Zerfass, classified in the 5th place!

 
The fourth edition of this report encompasses research ranging from fake news to the growth of digital and the impact of automation and artificial intelligence. Each year the IPR Board will continue to present top research insights that uncover the science beneath the art of public relations™.

New textbook on strategic communication

This new fundamental textbook by Jesper Falkheimer and Mats Heide offers a broad insight into the field of strategic communication. The authors apply a reflective and practice-oriented approach meaning earlier research or theories are not only described, but also discussed from different critical perspectives. A practice-oriented approach means, in this book, that the authors strongly emphasize the role of contexts and situations – where strategic communication actually happens.
This book will help business and communications students to not only define and understand a variety of strategic communications theories, but to use those theories to generate communication strategy and solutions. More info

Our colleague Stefan Wehmeier

Stefan Wehmeier 1968-2018.
A promising scientist and colleague has left us much too soon. Dr. Stefan Wehmeier, Professor of Organizational Communication at the University of Greifswald in northern Germany, died on 13 February 2018 in Greifswald after a long and severe illness.
Stefan Wehmeier was born on 5 April 1968 in Northrhine-Westphalia. From 1989 to 1997 he studied public communication (Publizistik), contemporary history and economic policy at the University of Münster. He earned his doctorate with the dissertation “Television in Transition. Differentiation and economization of a medium “. After several years of journalistic work, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Leipzig from 1999 to 2006. I had hired the promising young scientist as scientific assistant. We have published a lot together, he also had many independent publications especially on topics such as PR theories, organizational communication, public relations and society, online-public relations, but also PR history and PR historiography. With his habilitation thesis, in Germany a “second dissertation” with a higher standard than a “normal” dissertation (title: Public Relations: Status and future of a field of research, published in 2012), he presented an interesting metatheoretical study about the field of PR research. After leaving Leipzig (his contract had expired) he took over a junior professorship in Greifswald in 2007, then he earned professorships in Denmark, Vienna, Salzburg and again Greifswald since 2012. There he taught and conducted research for the last eight years.
He was member of EUPRERA, ICA, the German communication association (DGPuK), he attended many conferences and presented many outstanding presentations.
Stefan was not only a very popular colleague for all of us. From a scientific perspective, he was always interested in the reflection of organizational communication and PR-science, scientific and historiographical questions. He has written important contributions to these topics (also together with other colleagues). We all will miss Stefan, as an inspiring scientist and as a loveable person.

Barbara Czarniawska


Senior Professor of Management at Gothenburg Research Institute, School of Business, Economics and Law, Gothenburg University, Sweden. She is interested in complex organizations, institutionalism, action nets, organizational change, as well as methodology. She is the author and editor of numerous books and articles. At the congress she will talk about Big Ideas that travel.
 

Roy Suddaby

Strategic Research Professor at Newcastle University Business School and the Winspear Chair of Management at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria, Canada. Past editor of the Academy of Management Review, he is interested in profound organizational and institutional change. In 2010, he declared: “Organizational theorists pay too little attention to the critical role and function of corporate PR professionals in contemporary business organizations”. In Aarhus he will talk about communicative institutionalism.

Global public relations associations commit to enhancing public trust through ethics

The current crisis in trust is diminishing the ability for institutions, governments and organisations to operate effectively in society. Fake news and an inappropiate use of automated communications in particular, erode trust and reputations in our institutions.
To counteract this and take a leading position on the global practice of public relations, several professional associations met in Madrid to explore possible enhancements to their codes of ethics that, as a whole, guide hundreds of thousands of professionals around the world.
Participants in this global discussion on codes of ethics agreed to explore ways to enhance and elevate public relations´ reputation as the guardian of trust through the enhancement of codes of ethics and an agreement on an overarching set of principles to guide the profession.
Through a collaborative effort, participants agreed to work on raising the standards for the public relations profession on a global scale.
A task force of the organizations involved will examine in detail the building blocks that currently exist in how practitioners should practice public relations. We believe there is value in having a single set of principles and behaviours that everyone can promote. This will not replace existing individual association codes but will provide an agreement on an overarching set of principles.
Participants recognize the need to launch a campaign around the importance of a trustworthy practice of public relations while also examining current codes.

PRSA: Anvil Awards entries open until Feb. 9
The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) announced changes in its signature Silver and Bronze Anvil Awards to reflect rapid evolution in the public relations and communications industries.
The Silver Anvils – known as the Oscars of the communications industry – celebrate the best strategic and influential public relations programs of the year. The Bronze Anvil Awards recognize the increasing influence of Paid, Earned, Social and Owned Media programs across 30 categories. Entries are possible until February 9. More info
