EUPRERA PhD Award – 2025 call is now open!

The PhD Award for Excellent Doctoral Thesis is a bi-annual prize for excellent doctoral dissertation in any language. The call is open to any student studying public relations in Europe, regardless of the location.

Aim

The award honours academic excellence in the fields of public relations and communication management.

Chairs of the Jury

Prof. Dr. Winni Johansen, Prof. Dr. Wim Elving

Rewards

The winner will receive a certificate, naming her or his dissertation best of class in Europe. The winner will also be invited to present the dissertation at the EUPRERA Annual Congress, the main gathering for public relations scholars in Europe. Travel expenses and accommodation will be paid (up to € 350).

The winner will be recognised as a leading expert in public relations, corporate communication or communication management.

What to expect from the webinar

This webinar is tailored for aspiring PhD candidates exploring the EUPRERA PhD seminar, underlining EUPRERA’s commitment to nurturing academic excellence and supporting public relations and communication research conducted by emerging scholars.

The webinar content will be outlined by Professor Øyvind Ihlen of the University of Oslo, looking into its objectives, format, and what participants can anticipate.
Professor Jens Seiffert-Brockman from WU – Vienna University of Economics and Business will unpack the eligibility criteria and offer advice on creating a strong application.
As a former participant, Ester Conings Vanvik from Kristiana University College will share her personal experience with the seminar, detailing the challenges, rewards, and how it influenced her PhD research.

The webinar will conclude with an interactive Q&A session, offering attendees the opportunity to engage with the speakers.

Speakers

Jens Seiffert-Brockmann, Department of Business Communication, Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria
Professor for business communication at the Department of Business Communication at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU). Between 2015 and 2020, he was a post-doctoral researcher with the Corporate Communication Research Group, Department of Communication at the University of Vienna. He received his doctorate in communication science in 2014 from the University of Leipzig, where he also graduated in communication science and political science. Jens has also studied abroad at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, United States and as a guest researcher at Lund University, Sweden. Currently, he is an associate editor at the International Journal of Strategic Communication.

Øyvind Ihlen, Department of Media and Communication, the University of Oslo, Norway
is full professor in the Department of Media and Communication (IMK) at the University of Oslo (UiO) and adjunct Professor (Professor II) at Nord University. He is co-director of POLKOM – Center for the Study of Political Communication . His research focuses in particular on strategic communication of political issues. Ihlen has received several international prizes and published over 160 academic works.

Ester Conings Vanvik, Lund University, Sweden
Ester Conings Vanvik is a PhD Student in Strategic Communication at Lund University. Her research interest lies in the intersection of organizational communication and sustainability communication. In her thesis project she focuses on understanding how companies navigate communicatively the complex pressures in contemporary society. Ester holds a master’s degree in the Audio-Visual Arts (RITS), a master’s in marketing and advertising (Solvay Business School) and a master’s in Business Administration (Vlerick Business School). She works as a program director (Bachelor in PR and strategic communication) at Kristiania (Oslo) and has 25 years of experience from the advertising industry.

XVI EUPRERA PhD Seminar – September 18-20, 2023

The EUPRERA PhD seminar, running successfully since 2007, is specifically designed for early/mid-stage PhD-students in public relations, organizational communication, and/or strategic communication.

An immersive 3-day experience, where all participant can present their ongoing work, train their presentation and feedback skills and get guidance from experts and peers. First-hand advice on publication strategies and how to pursue an academic career are an added-value of our seminar.

Participants will be PhD students from across Europe (and beyond), thus being a valuable opportunity to establish a network for the future.

To guarantee a high level networking, the seminar is limited to 10 participants. Priority is based on the application date.
Deadline for application is June 30.
The seminar will be hosted by the Charles University Chalet in Pec pod Sněžkou in the amazing landscape of Krkonoše, the Czech highest mountains.

Three Doctoral Research Fellowships (SKO 1017) are available at the Department of Media and Communication (IMK), an interdisciplinary department, approaching media and communication from social scientific, humanistic and technological perspectives. PhD position at University of Fribourg

The Department of Media and Communication of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, is looking for a PhD candidate in Public Relations/ International Organizational Communication/ Public Diplomacy.

Some of the research topic may cover how organizations and nation states face the challenges of digitization (e.g. artificial intelligence and social media), what impact these have on reputation and what are the communication challenges of sustainability. The person will work under Prof. Diana Ingenhoff supervision and should have knowledge of both English and German language as basic requirments.

PhD fellowship in Communication & AI in Denmark

The Department of Communication and Arts, Roskilde University in Denmark, invites applications for a vacant three-year PhD fellowship in Communication and Artificial Intelligence. The application deadline is April 11, 2022, and the successful applicant is expected to start 1 September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The fellowship is part of the research project Strategizing Communication and Artificial Intelligence (SCAI), funded by THE VELUX FOUNDATIONS. The project focuses on how artificially intelligent communication technologies affect human agency in relation to professional discretion and ethical judgement. The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with Associate Professor Ib T. Gulbrandsen, the principal investigator of the project.
