A few hours ago a terrible shooting took place in Prague, at Charles University, Faculty of Arts.
We are shocked and disheartened by such actions.
We experienced the beauty and tranquillity of Prague just a few months ago, when we attended the EUPRERA Congress.
Fortunately, we can confirm that the Prague Congress organising team is safe, although understandably shook.
They are in our thoughts. Stay safe!
Our Annual Congress will take place in Prague this year, from September 20th to 23nd.
Under the title “Responsible Communication or Communicating Responsibility?”, a wide selection of scholars, professionals and researchers from all over Europe and beyond will support discussion around a key topic of communication for our present world.

Charles University is delighted to prepare the next EUPRERA congress in Prague. We are looking forward to the first day, hoping that the congress’ opening at the building of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, Technology Center UMPRUM (picture), will inspire all of us.
On the first day, participants will have the opportunity to visit the ateliers of UMPRUM. We will provide you with two rounds of guided tours to present how works are crafted by students and teachers in various ateliers and workshops. Meanwhile, those who arrive and register can have a break and take refreshments in a lounge.
As pre-conference activities, there will be the Paper Development Workshop led by Alexander Buhmann, BI Norwegian Business School, Sophia Volk, University of Zurich, and Chiara Valentini, University of Jyvaskyla. Then, a special format event, Education Café, will take place, convened by Anca Anton, University of Bucharest, and Monique Abbenbroek, Hogeschool Rotterdam.
After these pre-conference activities, there will be the official opening of the congress (in the late afternoon). The short speeches given by the organizers from the Faculty of Social Sciences and the EUPRERA president will precede two keynotes:

After the keynotes, we will enjoy an opening reception. From day 2, we will move to the buildings of Charles University.

Mind the planet – Consider choosing the less impacting means of transport: depending on your start point, you might opt for a train instead of a flight. At due time, we will open the online forum among registered participants to facilitate smart solutions such as the taxi sharing. Local public means are efficient, as well.

Fifty students of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University in Prague are starting a new master’s programme in Strategic Communication. Charles University is the first public university in the Czech Republic offering this field of study.
“Critical thinking and ethical decision-making will be the key components of our study programme. This requires an open and free discussion, which we do have at Charles University” says Denisa Hejlová, the head of the new programme.
The master’s programme in Strategic Communication builds on a successful bachelor’s programme in Marketing Communication and Public Relations launched in 2004 which is one of the most in demand programmes at the faculty among applicants. Both programmes are in Czech. The concept of Strategic Communication at Charles University found inspiration abroad, for example at Columbia University in the USA or the University of Leipzig in Germany.

You may have seen many smiling EUPRERA colleagues in pictures from Prague posted on social media in recent days. The ICA conference has been a fruitful meeting and many of our members contributed to its success. We saw in the programme:

The 2018 ICA preconference is the first collaboration between EUPRERA and PRSC. In total, 108 participants from 19 countries and regions attended the two-day preconference. This year, we received 136 submissions and 80 papers were accepted. The acceptance rate was 58%.The reception of the preconference is in the Gregr Hall of the Municipal Building, followed by a dinner for the organizing institutes in the French Restaurant in the Municipal Building. The EUPRERA current and former leadership (Prof. Ralph Tench, Prof. Øyvind Ihlen, and Prof. Ansgar Zerfass) also discussed with the PRSC leadership on the future collaboration opportunities.

The Theories of PR pre-conference brought together around 40 scholars from across Europe and beyond. The presentations were a wonderful collection of insights from people who use a rich and varied range of work to inform their analyses of PR. It was particularly inspiring to see so much new work being done by new European scholars, including doctoral students and fully-fledged academics. The rich discussion we had bodes very well for the future health and diversity of theoretical work in the field.

For this pre-conference for PhD and post-doctoral students, 12 papers out of 33 submissions were selected to be presented and discussed in a forum with established scholars from the field serving as mentors and giving feedback to each participant. The conference was sponsored by The Center on Public Diplomacy, University of Southern California & Rhonda Zaharna, Syracuse University and Lund University. It was a great success and brought new insights for both PhD students and established scholars.After founding and chairing the Public Diplomacy Interest Group from 2016 to 2018, Diana Ingenhoff, University of Fribourg, hands over to Alina Dolea, University of Bournemouth, who was elected new chair of the PD group at this year’s annual conference of the ICA.

This post-conference has been built on the recent collaborations by members of the EUPRERA Network on Public Affairs & Lobbying in Europe. The papers and discussions demonstrated strong consensus on the value of researching lobbying as communication. In addition to colleagues from EUPRERA the event attracted scholars from the US, Mexico and Australia, and the event sponsored talk of possible new international collaborations. It was also agreed that a post-conference on lobbying will be proposed for Washington DC next year. Look out for more details in the next few months.

A team of EUPRERA members are organizing a preconference at the ICA meeting in Prague, on May 24.
To enjoy greater recognition and academic legitimacy, the theoretical contributions of public relations as a field in its own right must be able to both stand alone and contribute to fields beyond disciplinary boundaries. This preconference proposes an in-depth reflection on the quality and significance of theoretical development in public relations scholarship. The aim is to discuss and reflect on what might be considered current theories of public relations and theories for public relations, as well as emerging bodies of work that are changing the shape of the field.
