How do fake news affect communication management? The 3rd LCM inquires about this extremely topical issue in the region

Practitioners working in communication management and public relations across Latin America will participate into the Latin American Communication Monitor (LCM) 2018-2019. The survey is now available on http://latincommunicationmonitor.com and will be open until June 30.
The Global Communication Monitor series are recognized as the larger studies about the profession in the world and have been identifying trend in the profession for more than a decade. Its annual reports provide invaluable insights for leaders in the field.
Additionally this year also marks the start of the next exciting phase for this joint endeavour of academia and practice. For the first time data collected in Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific will be completed with data from the rest of North America (US and Canada). With more than 80 countries covered and 50,000 participants to date, the Global Communication Monitor series is the only truly global study of strategic communication completely reliable in terms of scientist transparency.
This year’s monitor addresses highly debated topics such as the challenges of fake news and how to tackle them, how to provide information for decision-makers or leadership in public relations. The survey will identify characteristics of excellent communication departments and explore commonalities and differences across Latin America. Results will be relevant for the whole industry because comparisons Country-to-country comparisons and benchmarks of different types of organisations (companies, non-profits, governmental, agencies, etc.) will make the results relevant for the whole industry.
Participants could share their experiences and support his country to be represented in the global comparisons. Every participant will receive a free video-resume of results and will participate in a price draw for an inscription to the II Iberoamerican Comunicación Summit that will take place in Madrid in 2019.
The Latin American Communication Monitor (LCM) is organised by the European Public Relations Education and Research Association (EUPRERA) with the strategic partnership of Fundacom. Fact or Fiction: Re-Writing the Text on Gender Inequalities in Communication Management

March 8, 2018 – For Women’s day, the Institute for Public Relations has published an article by Ángeles Moreno and Ralph Tench on the gender research from the European Communication Monitor and the Latin American Communication Monitor.
“During our twelve years of studying the annual status of the profession through the European Communication Monitor and the Latin American Communication Monitor, we have also painted a picture of the gender issues in public relations and communication management practice”, said the authors. The article gives an overview on:

  • the gender division regarding salaries
  • the gap between work and life

European Communication Monitor 2018 launched: survey invites respondents to share insights and experiences

Practitioners working in communication departments and agencies across Europe are invited to take part in this year’s European Communication Monitor (ECM). The online survey is available at www.communicationmonitor.eu. The ECM is known as the largest scientific study of the profession worldwide. It has been identifying trends in the profession for more than a decade. Its annual reports provide invaluable insights for leaders in the field.
This year’s monitor addresses highly debated topics such as the challenges of fake news and how to tackle them, how to provide information for decision-makers, leadership in public relations, job satisfaction, and stress and work-life-balance of communicators. The survey will identify characteristics of excellent communication departments and explore commonalities and differences across Europe. Country-to-country comparisons and benchmarks of different types of organisations (companies, non-profits, governmental, agencies, etc.) will make the results relevant for everybody in the field.
The ECM 2018 also marks the start of the next exciting phase for this joint endeavour of academia and practice. The data gathered in Europe will be complemented by similar surveys in Asia-Pacific, Latin America and – for the first time – in North America. With more than 80 countries covered and 50,000 participants to date, the Global Communication Monitor series is the only truly global study of strategic communication. The European Communication Monitor is organised by the European Public Relations Education and Research Association (EUPRERA), representing almost 500 academics in the field, and the European Association of Communication Directors (EACD), a membership organisation of leading professionals, both headquartered in Brussels. Top 11 Public Relations Research Insights of 2017

Asia-Pacific Communication Monitor identifies ‘digital’, ‘social’, ‘mobile’ and ‘strategy’ as the ‘big four’ issues for communication professionals

The Asia-Pacific Communication Monitor 2017/18 is organised by the Asia-Pacific Association of Communication Directors (APACD) in collaboration with Quadriga University of Applied Sciences, Berlin and the European Public Relations Education and Research Association (EUPRERA), which also support the European and Latin America Communication Monitor. The study was also supported by PRIME Research (partner); Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (academic partner); RFI Daylight, Hong Kong (video partner), and Communication Director magazine (media partner).

Hong Kong, November 15, 2017 – The Asia-Pacific Communication Monitor 2017/18, a survey of more than 1,300 communication professionals working in corporations, government, non-profit organisations, and communication agencies across 22 Asia-Pacific countries, has identified the impact of digital technologies, social media, mobile communications, and the need for a strategic focus to align communication outcomes to organisational goals as the four top issues facing communicators.
Following its launch in 2015/16 as a bi-annual survey as part of the global Communication Monitor series across more than 80 countries, The Asia-Pacific Communication Monitor 2017/18 provides valuable understanding of the communication industry in Asia-Pacific and insights into its future.

The inter-related ‘top 10’ findings of the Asia-Pacific study were as follows.

  1. Coping with digital evolution and the social web is the most important strategic issue facing the communications profession over the next few years, including dealing with the speed and volume of information flow.
  1. There is strong growth in mobile communication, with 83.8 per cent of practitioners rating mobile communication via phone or tablet applications and mobile websites as collectively the second most important communication channel after social media and social networks.
  1. The shift away from the traditional PESO model of media use (paid, earned, shared, owned) is gathering speed in Asia-Pacific with more than half of all practitioners surveyed (52.6%) reporting that, in addition to the growth in use of social (shared) media, corporate publishing (owned media), predominantly in digital form, are important compared with 39.1 per cent in 2015/16.
  1. Media relations with print newspapers and magazines has slipped substantially from being the most important channel for communication with stakeholders and audiences (76.5 per cent rated these media as important in 2015/16) to the eighth most important channel (61.5 per cent in 2017/18). Their importance is predicted to decline even more by 2020, as are media relations with television and radio networks.
  1. More than 70 per cent of practitioners agree that social media influencers represent a new type of third party endorser who shape audience awareness and attitudes and are thus important in their organisation’s communication strategies. Influencers need to be addressed through social media influencer (SMI) engagement.
  1. Of concern though is that more than two-thirds (66.7 per cent) of practitioners rate their social media skills as highest for using social media to deliver messages, compared with lower ratings for managing online communities (44.0 per cent) and initiating online dialogue with stakeholders (39.0 per cent). This shows that the interactive two-way communication affordances of social media are not well used.
  1. Despite its identified importance, only one third of practitioners (34.9 per cent) say that linking business strategy and communication is a top priority in the near future, while 28.6 per cent believe that the role of communications in supporting top-management decision making needs to be strengthened. Both issues have declined in importance compared to the 2015/16 survey. However linking communication to business goals is ranked second in the overall list of key issues to address. Asia-Pacific professionals are behind their European colleagues in this respect. The need for development identified in this study underlines the concerning finding of the previous APCM survey, which reported stasis in the development and use of measurement and evaluation.
  1. Operational communication activities dominate professional work in communication, making up one-third (32.8 per cent) of all tasks and practices. This includes talking to journalists, writing media releases, and organising events. The second largest proportion of work is devoted to management activities such as planning, organising, budgeting and leading staff. Only one-fifth (20.5%) of the work of communication professionals is focussed on strategic and reflective activities to align the organisation or client and its stakeholders and publics, and discussing strategies with senior management and other departments. This is consistent across all types of organisations and is consistent globally. Communication professionals working in media relations and acting as a spokesperson, including in social media, have the highest operational workload.
  1. Job satisfaction of communication professionals in Asia-Pacific declined in 2017 compared with findings of the 2015/16 Asia-Pacific Communication Monitor. The 2017/18 study found that only 56.6 per cent are satisfied with their job, compared with 65.4 per cent in 2015/16. Also, ‘neutral’ satisfaction ratings rose to 30.9 per cent compared with 11.7 per cent two years ago.
  1. Communication professionals agree that continuing professional development is important. However, availability of professional development does not align with key areas of need. For example, while technical knowledge is rated a high priority by most practitioners across the region, only 4.0 per cent of practitioners in New Zealand, 9.3 per cent in Malaysia, 11.6 per cent in Australia, 12.9 per cent in Hong Kong, 14.1 per cent in India, and 14.9 per cent in Japan report that such training is available in their organisation.

The study is conducted by four leading professors: Professor Jim Macnamara from the University of Technology Sydney; Professor May O. Lwin from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; Professor Ana Adi from Quadriga University of Applied Sciences, Berlin; and Professor Ansgar Zerfass from the University of Leipzig, who is lead researcher of the European Communication Monitor and the Communication Monitor series globally, supported by academics across the region.
The findings of the Asia-Pacific Communication Monitor help identify best practice, areas for professional development, and academic courses, and contribute to global data on the public relations, corporate communication and related fields.

European Communication Monitor 2017 results presented today

World’s largest survey in strategic communication demonstrates increasing influence of the communication profession in organisations and societal debates.

  • Professionals working in communications are fully aware of the trend towards increased visualisation in society, however every second professional has limited visual competencies

Brussels, June 29th 2017 – The European Communication Monitor has been surveying trends in strategic communication for more than a decade. This year’s edition is based on a record number of 3,387 respondents from every European country, ensuring it makes once more an outstanding contribution in the area of strategic communication and providing valuable insights for professionals working in public relations, business or political communication. Moreover, this year’s Monitor deals with the cultural transformation towards hypermodernity and offers detailed insights for everybody working as communication managers for small, medium or large organisations in the public or private sector. Comparable global data for the Latin American and Asia-Pacific regions make the Monitor even more relevant.
Visual trend offers huge potential for strategic communication
The fact that we live in a visual society and social media and mobile communication boost all types of visuals is clearly observable and broadly recognised by European communication managers. However, 53.3 per cent of the surveyed professionals have low visual communication skills – compared to 12.1 per cent with high visual competencies. That is also true at the organisational level. More than 80 per cent of the professionals have implemented standard guidelines for their visual communication. However, only 36.7 per cent have developed advanced guidelines and less than five per cent have advanced management processes for visual communication.

Social (ro-)bots are largely neglected in Europe
Despite the growing commercial and political application of social bots findings from the ECM 2017 data demonstrate that this phenomenon is largely neglected by many communication professionals in Europe. Only one third follow the debate about social bots and 15.9 per cent have no idea about the topic at all. In this context social bots are mainly seen as a threat for public debates and organisational reputation alike, although four out of ten respondents do also see opportunities arising from them. 73.2 per cent of all respondents agree that social bots present ethical challenges for the profession.

Hypermodernity challenges old paradigms in strategic communication and for organisations
A hypermodern society is a society in overdrive, characterised by a culture of hyper consumption, hyper change, and hyper individualism. A large majority of 71.5 per cent of the European communication professionals witness the cultural transformation towards a hyper modern culture in their country. The transition from a postmodern to hypermodern culture is the strongest in consultancies (57.2 per cent) and private companies (51.8 per cent). Organisations with postmodern and hypermodern characteristics are ahead in sensing the trend towards an overarching consumer mentality. Most of them think that it has already changed communication with stakeholders and a large majority thinks that it will change their communication in the next three years.
Quality management and Benchmarking
Quality management and continuous improvement is less common in communication departments and marketing, compared to other organisational functions. If communication departments assess their activities at all, they focus predominantly on the performance or impact of messaging activities. Holistic benchmarking approaches against externally validated standards seem to be less relevant.

While the European Communication Monitor continues to track the specifics of the communicator’s role we are also interested in mapping and monitoring the influence of wider societal issues, from economic and cultural developments to technological change, and understand their implications on practice.”
Heitmann“What stands out most of all from this year’s Monitor is the recognition of the important operational and strategic contribution that communications makes to an organisation’s success, with more than 70% approval rates, with the communications function emerging as a key supporter for daily management and the operations of other departments,” said Herbert Heitmann, president of the European Association of Communication Directors (EACD). He added: “However, top management is not aware of the full range of contributions that communications can deliver. More efforts are necessary to close this expectation gap.”
