Chiara Valentini awarded for Outstanding Edited Book

Chiara Valentini, Professor of Corporate Communication and EUPRERA Head of Scientific Committee, has received an award as Outstanding Edited Book from the International Communication Association for “Public Relations” published by De Gruyter.

The volume was noted as one of the best recently published publications and collected the most important theoretical, conceptual, and methodological knowledge of the field. It addresses three questions: What is public relations? What do public relations professionals do? What is the theoretical basis for studying and practicing public relations? and involved scholars from different continents, backgrounds, and expertise.

The award is acknowledged by the International Communication Association, the largest international association aiming advance the scholarly study of communication by encouraging and facilitating excellence in academic research worldwide.

ICA PR Awards for Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation

The Public Relations Division of ICA invites submissions for the 2022 James E. Grunig and Larissa A. Grunig Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Awards. Eligible entrants for this competition cycle include theses and dissertations successfully defended during the period from January 1, 2020, through December 31, 2021.

Theses and dissertations must focus upon phenomena, issues and questions relevant to the study of public relations. Award winners will be recognized at the ICA Conference in Paris, France, May 26-30, 2022. The winner of the Dissertation Award will receive US$500, and the winner of the Thesis Award will receive US$350. The advisors of both winners will receive certificates recognizing their efforts. ICA New Book Award – nominations by Jan. 14!

The Public Relations Division of the International Communication Association (ICA) has established a new biennial competition for the “ICA Public Relations Book Award” to recognize the most outstanding book(s) published in English in the field of public relations.

To be considered for the inaugural edition of the award that will presented in May 2022 in Paris, books must be published in the previous three years.

Grunig and Grunig Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Awards

The Public Relations Division of ICA invites submissions for the 2020 James E. Grunig and Larissa A. Grunig Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Awards.

Eligible entrants for this competition cycle include master’s theses and doctoral dissertations successfully defended during the period from January 1, 2018, through December 31, 2019. Theses and dissertations must focus upon phenomena, issues and questions relevant to the study of public relations. Submitters don’t have to submit the whole dissertation or thesis but will have to deliver a 30-40 page manuscript in English by February 1, 2020.

Award winners will be recognized at the ICA Conference
in Gold Coast, Australia, May 21-25, 2020.

6 deadline extensions: still time to send your proposals

A period rich of deadlines in view of this year’s conferences and activities. Be aware of six deadline extensions which may give you the opportunity to participate in case you were not in time:

ICA pre-conference on convergence – abstracts

Extension until February 25 to submit abstracts for the ICA pre-conference “Are We Moving Towards Convergence? Revisiting communication disciplines, theories, models and concepts” taking place on May 24 in Washington D.C. The purpose of this pre-conference is not only to study this debate, but also to contribute to it. We therefore invite junior and senior scholars representing one or more of the following disciplines – organizational communication, public relations, business communication, corporate communication, and strategic communication – to submit an abstract. Marketing communication survey

Academics and practitioners in the fields of marketing communications and brand management are invited to participate in the survey on Brand Hijacking, prolonged until February 28. ECREA conference Trial and Error – abstracts

The European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) Temporary Working Group on “Journalism and Communication Education” has extended to March 3 the abstract deadline for Trial and Error III. The conference, to be held in Salzburg, Austria, on May 17-18, is explicitly aimed at research about a broad variety of training for media professionals and will deal with the theme “Trial and Error III – Business as usual? On the Relationship between Industry and Education for Media Professionals in Times of Change“. More info

History of PR conference – abstracts

Given the significance of the 10th anniversary, two panels on History of PR have been included. This is an excellent opportunity if you missed the abstract deadline and still want to attend and actively participate. Individuals wishing to participate on either of the panels – Future of PR History or Teaching PR History – should create a 200 word (maximum) abstract of their contribution to the panel’s concept, to be sent on March 11 at the latest. 1-day ICA Pre-conference “Are We Moving Towards Convergence?
Revisiting communication disciplines, theories, models and concepts”

Within the past two decades, communication scholars have been preoccupied with debating the intellectual boundaries between disciplines, theories, models and concepts, as well as the institutional legitimacy of the field as such. Some researchers have talked about ‘convergence’ (Zorn, 2002). Other researchers have talked about ‘bridging’ (Cornelissen & Christensen, 2011). Others again take an alternative approach promoting a new ‘interdisciplinary paradigm’ (Nothaft, Werder, Vercic, & Zerfass, 2018). The new thing about this debate is that it seems to take place both inside each discipline and across disciplines.

The purpose of this pre-conference is not only to study this debate, but also to contribute to it. We therefore invite junior and senior scholars representing one or more of the following disciplines – organizational communication, public relations, business communication, corporate communication, and strategic communication – to submit an abstract.

Call for Proposals for ICA PhD Workshop – deadline January 20

Half-day ICA Pre-conference PhD Workshop
in Public Relations and Strategic Communication

taking place on May 24 from 9.00 am until 1.00 pm,
prior to the Annual Conference of the International
Communication Association (ICA), in Washington D.C.

The aim of the workshop is to provide doctoral students with an opportunity to discuss their dissertation research in a constructive atmosphere. The workshop is relevant for PhD students within the research field of Strategic Communication, Public Relations and Organizational Communication, at different stages of their dissertation process.

Students will receive feedback on their projects, theoretical frameworks, methodologies and research designs from senior scholars and fellow students, who review the proposals. By reviewing other students’ papers, students learn also more about the reviewing process as well as improving their skills on how to write, submit and revise papers for top journals. The workshop also serves as a platform for students working in these areas to establish a valuable network and discuss a variety of issues besides the dissertation projects, which are important for academic careers.

This is a competitive workshop: only a selected number of students, whose proposals are accepted, will be granted the possibility to attend it.

ICA recognitions to Betteke van Ruler, appointed ICA Fellow, and Diana Ingenhoff, awarded for the Top Faculty Best Paper

Professor emerita Betteke van Ruler has been appointed ICA Fellow by the International Communication Association during the 2018 conference in Praque. Fellow status in the ICA is primarily a recognition of distinguished scholarly contributions to the broad field of communication. The jury commented “Dr. van Ruler has been at the forefront of the theoretical development of the field of public relations and strategic management. Highly respected among public relations and organizational scholars in Communication and related disciplines and honored by professional associations and practitioners, Professor van Ruler has not only been a central figure in bringing cross-national and global perspectives to the study of public relations, she has been a dynamic force in transforming the theoretical and communicative frames that typified the study and practice of public relations”. Back from ICA Prague conference

You may have seen many smiling EUPRERA colleagues in pictures from Prague posted on social media in recent days. The ICA conference has been a fruitful meeting and many of our members contributed to its success. We saw in the programme:

Diverse Voices: Authentic Communication, Trust, Dialogue, and Society

Organised by Chun-Ju Flora Hung-Baesecke, Xianhong Chen, Yi-Ru Regina Chen, representing PRSC (Public Relations Society of China); Øyvind Ihlen, Ralph Tench, representing EUPRERA; Denisa Hejlová, from Charles University.
The 2018 ICA preconference is the first collaboration between EUPRERA and PRSC. In total, 108 participants from 19 countries and regions attended the two-day preconference. This year, we received 136 submissions and 80 papers were accepted. The acceptance rate was 58%.The reception of the preconference is in the Gregr Hall of the Municipal Building, followed by a dinner for the organizing institutes in the French Restaurant in the Municipal Building. The EUPRERA current and former leadership (Prof. Ralph Tench, Prof. Øyvind Ihlen, and Prof. Ansgar Zerfass) also discussed with the PRSC leadership on the future collaboration opportunities.

Theories in Public Relations: Reflections and Future Directions

Organised by Chiara Valentini, Aarhus University; Lee Edwards, London School of Economics and Social Sciences.
The Theories of PR pre-conference brought together around 40 scholars from across Europe and beyond. The presentations were a wonderful collection of insights from people who use a rich and varied range of work to inform their analyses of PR. It was particularly inspiring to see so much new work being done by new European scholars, including doctoral students and fully-fledged academics. The rich discussion we had bodes very well for the future health and diversity of theoretical work in the field.

Emerging Research and Trends in Public Diplomacy and Nation Branding

Organised by Alina Dolea, Bournemouth University; Diana Ingenhoff, University of Fribourg; James Pamment, Lund University; Rhonda Zaharna, American University; Jay Wang, USC Center on Public Diplomacy; Steve Pike, Syracuse University.
For this pre-conference for PhD and post-doctoral students, 12 papers out of 33 submissions were selected to be presented and discussed in a forum with established scholars from the field serving as mentors and giving feedback to each participant. The conference was sponsored by The Center on Public Diplomacy, University of Southern California & Rhonda Zaharna, Syracuse University and Lund University. It was a great success and brought new insights for both PhD students and established scholars.After founding and chairing the Public Diplomacy Interest Group from 2016 to 2018, Diana Ingenhoff, University of Fribourg, hands over to Alina Dolea, University of Bournemouth, who was elected new chair of the PD group at this year’s annual conference of the ICA.

Lobbying and Democracy: The Voice of Communication

Organised by Øyvind Ihlen, University of Oslo; Anna Shavit, Charles Uuniversity; Chiara Valentini, University of Aarhus; Scott Davidson, University of Leicester.
This post-conference has been built on the recent collaborations by members of the EUPRERA Network on Public Affairs & Lobbying in Europe. The papers and discussions demonstrated strong consensus on the value of researching lobbying as communication. In addition to colleagues from EUPRERA the event attracted scholars from the US, Mexico and Australia, and the event sponsored talk of possible new international collaborations. It was also agreed that a post-conference on lobbying will be proposed for Washington DC next year. Look out for more details in the next few months.
