Juan Meng Receives the 2023 IPR Pathfinder Award

We are happy to celebrate achievements in the EUPRERA community! Dr. Juan Meng, the Head of the Department of Advertising and Public Relations of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia (USA), was honoured with the prestigious 2023 IPR Pathfinder Award. This award is presented annually by the Institute for Public Relations to an individual whose published work serves as a bridge between the public relations profession and the research community. The IPR Pathfinder Award Committee, comprised of the IPR Board of Trustees, past winners, and academic leaders in the field, recognized Dr. Meng’s remarkable achievements and outstanding contributions to the field of public relations through research, education, and leadership.

Juan Meng’s dedication to public relations is marked by significant and sustained contributions, resulting in a significant corpus of articles, chapters, books, and other research endeavours that have advanced the profession, earning international attention. Her teaching areas include public relations campaigns, research, management, and global PR, while her research focuses on leadership in public relations, measurement, trust, employee engagement, and reputation management.

She has been substantially involved in the EUPRERA community: editing special issues, contributing to research projects, taking part in webinars, and delivering interviews showcase her commitment to fostering knowledge-sharing and collaboration within the EUPRERA public relations community. Here are a few examples:

As an IPR Pathfinder Award recipient, she joins the ranks of other EUPRERA members who received this distinction: Ansgar Zerfass (2014), Anne Gregory (2015), Dejan Verčič (2016), and Juan-Carlos Molleda (2022).

IPR’s Top 19 Public Relations Insights of 2022

The Institute for Public Relations annually compiles the top research studies that they think public relations professionals should know about from the previous year.

Transformations to the workplace, an increased focus on sustainability, the impact of COVID-19, and major breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and other technologies: these are some of the opportunities and challenges spotlighted in IPR’s guide.

Juan-Carlos Molleda receives the Pathfinder award

We’re proud to announce that our colleague and EUPRERA member Juan-Carlos Molleda, dean and professor of the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon, will receive the 2022 Institute for Public Relations Pathfinder Award for his significant and sustained contributions to the field of public relations through research, education, and leadership.

Dr. Molleda has been a pioneer of the Latin-American Communication Monitor, a EUPRERA study part of the widest global and recognized Global Communication Monitor. We are proud to remind that earlier also Dejan Verčič, member of the European Communication Monitor core team, and Ansgar Zerfass, leader of the EUPRERA Monitors, received the same recognition.

The IPR Pathfinder Award is presented annually to an individual whose published work positively impacts the profession and research community by bridging the two.  The IPR Pathfinder Award Committee comprising IPR Trustees, past winners, and academic leaders in the field recognized Molleda’s noteworthy achievements and outstanding research.

IPR Bridge Hybrid Conference 2022

IPR is hosting the fifth annual IPR Bridge—Public Relations and Communication HYBRID Conference, the original two-day conference geared toward both public relations and communication practitioners and academics.

This year conference will be hybrid and on separate dates for the online and in person session. The in person conference will be held at Georgetown University on May 11-12 and the Virtual session will be on June 13-16.

The IPR Bridge allows academics to learn from senior-level executives, while having an opportunity to present their research at a peer-reviewed conference. Mid-to-senior-level executives can share their experiences with academics and learn about the latest in public relations and communications research. A key feature of this conference is the opportunity to network and interact with top leaders in both the practice and the academy in a small setting.

IPR Top Insights 2020

The Institute for PR annually compiles some of the best research that public relations professionals should know about from the previous year.

In 2020, the list has been expanded from the 10 to the top 15 studies and in addition to the quality of the research, another criterion for inclusion on the top list is the accessibility of the research (i.e. not hidden behind a paywall). Our European Communication Monitor is listed among the tops 15 studies! Among the others, COVId-19 and behavioral science, vaccine communication and the role of PR in the pandemic have a central space in this year report.

Internal Communication and Emotional Culture
Effects of Internal Communication and Emotional Culture on Employees’ Organizational Identification

In a survey of 482 full-time employees in the U.S., this study examined the linkage between impact of emotional culture and internal communications on employees’ organizational identification.

Specifically, the authors explored two types of internal communications: leadership-level motivating language use and organizational-level symmetrical internal communication. Leadership motivating language entails aligning employees’ personal goals with a higher organizational purpose (i.e., meaning-making language), articulating what needs to be done to achieve organization goals (i.e., direction-giving language), and conveying support, compassion, and respect to employees (i.e., empathetic language). Symmetrical internal communication represents the notion of openness, reciprocity, and tolerance for disagreement between organizations and employees.

Key findings include:

  • Leadership-level motivating language use and corporate-level symmetrical internal communication played a positive role in eliciting a positive emotional culture.
  • A positive emotional culture was directly and positively associated with strong organizational identification.
  • Internal communications helped cultivate a positive emotional culture, which, in turn, boosted employee organizational identification.
  • Organizations should:
    • Train leaders to use motivating language.
    • Invest in resources to foster a two-way, symmetrical internal communication system, such as using annual surveys, town hall meetings, social media platforms, and informal gatherings to collect employees’ feedback.
    • Use different approaches in promoting a positive workplace emotional culture.

IPR signature study: How Companies Are Engaging Employees During COVID-19

The Institute for Public Relations and Peppercomm surveyed 403 communication executives and senior leaders to find out how their companies are communicating with and engaging their workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Key topics include what are the most trusted go-to sources and channels for communicators; how the pandemic has impacted the workforce including employee satisfaction and productivity; what companies are communicating about and how they are tracking it; how diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives have changed; how companies are preparing for the return-to-office; and best practices for internal communication during this crisis.
