#EUPRERAtalks – Communicating a pandemic

What to expect from the webinar

On the webinar the speakers present research on the experiences of how the Covid-19 pandemic was communicated in the Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The Nordic countries are often discussed in terms of similarities concerning an extensive welfare system, economic policies, media systems, and high levels of trust in societal actors.

However, in the wake of a global pandemic, the countries’ coping strategies varied, creating certain question marks on the existence of a “Nordic model”.

Call for Papers for IJSC: Strategic Communication and the Global Pandemic

The International Journal of Strategic Communication invites submissions for the special issue on Strategic Communication and the Global Pandemic (Volume 16(2), 2022), guest edited by Juan Meng and Ralph Tench.

Abstracts are due by March 1. Contributions that provide insights with robust theoretical and practical implications and recommendations for strategic communication in the global pandemic will be given the highest consideration. Editors are especially interested in manuscripts that explore BOTH the challenges and opportunities for strategic communication at the intersection of global pandemics, international communication, and cross-cultural research.

IPR signature study: How Companies Are Engaging Employees During COVID-19

The Institute for Public Relations and Peppercomm surveyed 403 communication executives and senior leaders to find out how their companies are communicating with and engaging their workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Key topics include what are the most trusted go-to sources and channels for communicators; how the pandemic has impacted the workforce including employee satisfaction and productivity; what companies are communicating about and how they are tracking it; how diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives have changed; how companies are preparing for the return-to-office; and best practices for internal communication during this crisis. The report also features deep dives into internal communication topic and sidebars spotlight senior executive leaders.

ICMS XXIII conference: Resilience for Survival – submissions by June 20

The 23rd International Conference on Multidisciplinary Studies on “Resilience for Survival” will take place at Cambridge University on July 30-31 as virtual. Organized by EUSER, ICMS XXIII offers seven main sessions in the domains of Social, Educational, Language, Economics, Engineering, Medicine and Interdisciplinary Studies, aiming to bring together scholars, academicians, researchers and students to exchange ideas and share knowledge.

The aim is collecting thoughts on what humanity’s plan b should be i.e. for schools, universities, media, governments, hospitals and other domains in the event of a future pandemic such as Covid-19. The abstracts and full texts will be published in proceedings book with ISBN as well as in one of the 10 scientific journals, shared with the authorities such as UN and WHO.

You can register until June 20 with an abstract, full paper or presentation. The fee has been lowered to support all participants due to the pandemic.

Pandemic keywords: get involved – experiences from Romania

COVID-19 pandemic has redesigned our lives, our inner spaces, the public spaces, the real and the digital, but, probably, most important, has learned us that really important messages have to become contagious.

#STAY HOME (#STAI ACASA) was probably the most viral message at a global scale, and spreading it – is the equivalent of fighting the epidemy.

As a result, the M.A. students in Advertising from the Department of Communication and Public Relations, Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest have started a campaign in partnership with the Bucharest City Hall, Direction of Integrity, based on a layout inspired by the Creation of Adam fresco of Michelangelo, from the Sistine Chapel.

The campaign features the following messages: “Acting as one from a distance. Each moment we spend far from each other brings us closer to being together again. Protect yourself and those around you”.

The campaign was probably the most important academic project in the field of communication supporting a social cause, developed in partnership with a public institution, during the pandemic in Romania and it has been covered by Mediafax, one of the major national news agencies.

The MA in Advertising provided by the Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest was the first programme in the field established in Romania, after the fall of the communist regime. It was founded and coordinated by one of the members of the EUPRERA organization, Assoc. Prof. Alexandra Crăciun.

With a population of 1,883,425 inhabitants within the city limits, and 2.27 million people including the metropolitan area, Bucharest is the fifth largest city in the European Union by population, after Berlin, Madrid, Rome, and Paris. First mentioned in documents in 1459, Bucharest became the capital of Romania in 1862. Its architecture is a mix of neo-classical, Art Nouveau, Bauhaus, art deco, communist and postmodern influences. Between the two World Wars, the nickname of the city was the ‘Little Paris’.

Free online course “Journalism in a pandemic”, May 4-31

Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas (University of Texas at Austin), UNESCO, the World Health Association and UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) launched the massive open online course (MOOC) “Journalism in a pandemic: Covering COVID-19 now and in the future”.

The course will be held from May 4 to 31 in four languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese and French) and will be taught by award-winning science journalist and author and TED speaker Maryn McKenna. Registration is open!

Pandemic Rhetoric: a new project on risk communication strategies

A new interesting project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council and landed by Øyvind Ihlen, has been launched recently: Pandemic Rhetoric: Risk Communication Strategies in a Changed Media Landscape (PAR).

The likelihood of a pandemic outbreak and the rapid changes in the media landscape create a social challenge. An increasing number of people get their news only through social media and institutional and epistemic trust are increasingly under negotiation.

The focus of the PAR-project is on meeting the urgent need to understand the rhetorical conditions and challenges for risk communication in this changed landscape, and to assist in formulating fitting channel and content strategies. A comparison across Norway, Sweden and Denmark will allow for a systematic analysis of the pressing problem, the audience, the rhetorical constraints and possibilities for the risk rhetoric.
