IPRA Golden World Awards for Excellence: entries now open

IPRA, the International Public Relations Association, announces that the entries for the Golden World Awards for Excellence (GWA) 2018 are now open. The GWA recognizes excellence in public relations practice worldwide in a variety of categories.
You may enter on the IPRA website where you will also find a full description of the rules, an entry kit and the 37 categories (including seven new ones this year). You can add the same entry to multiple categories to increase your chance of winning. Early-bird deadline: March 26; final deadline: May 14. More info

European Communication Monitor 2018 launched: survey invites respondents to share insights and experiences

Practitioners working in communication departments and agencies across Europe are invited to take part in this year’s European Communication Monitor (ECM). The online survey is available at www.communicationmonitor.eu. The ECM is known as the largest scientific study of the profession worldwide. It has been identifying trends in the profession for more than a decade. Its annual reports provide invaluable insights for leaders in the field.
This year’s monitor addresses highly debated topics such as the challenges of fake news and how to tackle them, how to provide information for decision-makers, leadership in public relations, job satisfaction, and stress and work-life-balance of communicators. The survey will identify characteristics of excellent communication departments and explore commonalities and differences across Europe. Country-to-country comparisons and benchmarks of different types of organisations (companies, non-profits, governmental, agencies, etc.) will make the results relevant for everybody in the field.
The ECM 2018 also marks the start of the next exciting phase for this joint endeavour of academia and practice. The data gathered in Europe will be complemented by similar surveys in Asia-Pacific, Latin America and – for the first time – in North America. With more than 80 countries covered and 50,000 participants to date, the Global Communication Monitor series is the only truly global study of strategic communication. Ansgar Zerfass, Chair Professor at Leipzig University and leader of the study series, says: “We are proud that the leading universities and researchers in all major countries are active collaborators of this initiative. This helps us to take an informed international perspective. Renowned and strong partners from the profession assure that we explore relevant topics and that filling in the survey is inspiring for respondents.” All results of the studies are available for free. A new website with reports, publications, videos and interactive self-assessment features will be launched later this year.
The European Communication Monitor is organised by the European Public Relations Education and Research Association (EUPRERA), representing almost 500 academics in the field, and the European Association of Communication Directors (EACD), a membership organisation of leading professionals, both headquartered in Brussels. It is supported by premium partner PRIME Research, a global leader in communication research and a member of the Cision Group, as well as Fink & Fuchs, Wiesbaden, as digital communications partner. The academic team running the survey includes professors from 23 renowned universities ranging from Amsterdam to Madrid and Milan to Moscow, with new colleagues e.g. from Vienna, Lisbon, Louvaine and Zagreb joining the team for the next years.

Summer school in Paris

The University of Maryland School of Public Policy will offer a for-credit international graduate course on understanding and synthesizing evidence-based research in Summer 2018. Classes will be held in Paris, France, from June 4 to 15, with some assignments being due before and after the two weeks in Paris.
With the assistance of the Economics Department at Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), this study abroad course is designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate students studying public policy, public administration, and related subjects such as education, governance, international development, political science, public health, social welfare, sociology, and urban planning. BledCom launches EUPRERA Presidents' panel

BledCom is a partner conference of EUPRERA and this year, on the occasion of its 25 jubilee edition, BledCom launches the new EUPRERA Presidents’ panel: a session during which our past presidents will offer their views and stimulate debate.

Top 11 Public Relations Research Insights of 2017

For the fourth annual edition of the Top 10 Research Insights of 2017, the Institute for PR did something different and added an 11th study: “we believe every single one of these research studies have some great learnings for the profession”.
This report is based on the studies’ rigor of methodology, findings, relevance to practice and accessibility. And this year we are happy to see the European Communication Monitor, conducted by EUPRERA and EACD and lead by Ansgar Zerfass, classified in the 5th place!

The fourth edition of this report encompasses research ranging from fake news to the growth of digital and the impact of automation and artificial intelligence. Each year the IPR Board will continue to present top research insights that uncover the science beneath the art of public relations™.

New textbook on strategic communication

This new fundamental textbook by Jesper Falkheimer and Mats Heide offers a broad insight into the field of strategic communication. The authors apply a reflective and practice-oriented approach meaning earlier research or theories are not only described, but also discussed from different critical perspectives. A practice-oriented approach means, in this book, that the authors strongly emphasize the role of contexts and situations – where strategic communication actually happens.

Our colleague Stefan Wehmeier

Stefan Wehmeier 1968-2018.
A promising scientist and colleague has left us much too soon. Dr. Stefan Wehmeier, Professor of Organizational Communication at the University of Greifswald in northern Germany, died on 13 February 2018 in Greifswald after a long and severe illness.
Stefan Wehmeier was born on 5 April 1968 in Northrhine-Westphalia. From 1989 to 1997 he studied public communication (Publizistik), contemporary history and economic policy at the University of Münster. He earned his doctorate with the dissertation “Television in Transition. Differentiation and economization of a medium “. After several years of journalistic work, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Leipzig from 1999 to 2006. I had hired the promising young scientist as scientific assistant. We have published a lot together, he also had many independent publications especially on topics such as PR theories, organizational communication, public relations and society, online-public relations, but also PR history and PR historiography. With his habilitation thesis, in Germany a “second dissertation” with a higher standard than a “normal” dissertation (title: Public Relations: Status and future of a field of research, published in 2012), he presented an interesting metatheoretical study about the field of PR research. After leaving Leipzig (his contract had expired) he took over a junior professorship in Greifswald in 2007, then he earned professorships in Denmark, Vienna, Salzburg and again Greifswald since 2012. There he taught and conducted research for the last eight years.
He was member of EUPRERA, ICA, the German communication association (DGPuK), he attended many conferences and presented many outstanding presentations.
Stefan was not only a very popular colleague for all of us. From a scientific perspective, he was always interested in the reflection of organizational communication and PR-science, scientific and historiographical questions. He has written important contributions to these topics (also together with other colleagues). We all will miss Stefan, as an inspiring scientist and as a loveable person.

Barbara Czarniawska

Senior Professor of Management at Gothenburg Research Institute, School of Business, Economics and Law, Gothenburg University, Sweden. She is interested in complex organizations, institutionalism, action nets, organizational change, as well as methodology. She is the author and editor of numerous books and articles. At the congress she will talk about Big Ideas that travel.

Roy Suddaby

Strategic Research Professor at Newcastle University Business School and the Winspear Chair of Management at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria, Canada. Past editor of the Academy of Management Review, he is interested in profound organizational and institutional change. In 2010, he declared: “Organizational theorists pay too little attention to the critical role and function of corporate PR professionals in contemporary business organizations”. In Aarhus he will talk about communicative institutionalism.

PhD Seminar

The EUPRERA PhD seminar will take place on September 25-27, prior to the congress.
